What kid hasn’t ever wanted a dog? Like seriously, does such a child even exist? So even though we attempt to adult, and the world is always leading us in that direction, deep down, we truly just want to go back to our carefree childhood days.
But here’s the kicker, owning a dog in your twenties is actually a very responsible, adult-like thing to do. So it’s the best of both worlds! No matter if you’re into the dogs that can fit into your purse, or the gentle giants, I think every twenty-something deserves to own a dog. And if you’re still on the fence about taking the leap into puppy parenthood, here are some very persuasive and pretty legit reasons why owning a dog in your twenties is just the right thing to do.
- Loyal to a fault
Although we appear like we have it all together on the outside, twenty somethings have a lot to deal with in life, and the truth is, we’re all a little insecure on the inside. A furry, loyal sidekick is the perfect cure for such a thing!
- They’re there for you when it feels like the rest of the world isn’t
Every dog has his day. Sometimes, when it just feels like life’s got you down, or you’re feeling a little lonely, dogs will always stick by your side. Judgement free.
- They teach responsibility
Having a puppy is kind of like the crash course for having a baby. Because, NEWSFLASH, dogs are kind of needy. I mean, they need be fed, walked, taken outside a million times a day, potty trained, etc. Parents used it on you as a kid to teach you responsibility, now we’re learning it all over again, adult style.
- They’re always happy to see you
Whether it’s been a bad day at work, or you were only gone for a couple minutes, dogs will always greet you at the door with a wagging tail and a bunch of wet kisses (instant mood lifter).
- They are great cuddle buddies
No matter if you have a lap dog, or a dog that thinks they’re a lap dog, dogs are THE BEST snuggle pals for those cold winter nights or dreary rainy days.
- They’re therapeutic stress reliefs
Colleges have them during finals weeks. Hospitals have them as comforting companions. Why? Because it’s psychologically proven that petting dogs can drastically reduce your stress levels. I mean, you can argue with science!
- They’ll stand up for you and protect you
A dog will risk it’s life to protect their loved ones (Turner & Hooch anyone?). So, if you’re ever feeling a little vulnerable or just want an awesome body guard that doesn’t give lip, adopt a dog and love it to death, because they’re sure to do the same in return.
I believe every twenty something should own a dog, but heck, why am I telling you that? And if halfway through this list of reasons, you didn’t feel compelled to go out and get a puppy, then I have failed you. I mean come on, the puppy pictures would’ve put me over the edge!
